As a worldwide church this week, we have been studying Acts 10-15. In this section, Peter has a dream and understands, through revelation, that he is to take the gospel to everyone, not just those of Jewish descent. He says, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.” In our branch, part of my responsibility is to work with the children, and because I wanted to share this scripture with them, I looked up the definition for respecter, “a person who has a high regard for someone or something.” I know the idea is that our Heavenly Father does not elevate one person over another, and that he loves us all.
This has given me a lot to ponder. While I don’t think I look down on others, and try to love everyone, I have been wondering how I can be more like my Savior in this way. I probably do elevate some more than others, though. I admire them, and want to learn from them, and think the world of them. Maybe this is the attitude I should have about all of God’s children. Everyone has something to share. So rather than just “not looking down” on others, maybe I can find things I admire in everyone.
