Write it Down

Something sweet happened on Monday.  However, I can’t tell you what it was.  I remember thinking that it was just amazing and that I should write it down in a journal or something.  The thought came to me that I should probably get a daily calendar and cast my mind over my interactions with my children each day and write down the special, sweet, and challenging moments each day.  While that inspiration has stuck with me, whatever happened did not.

I can’t tell you the number of times I would tell my mom something sweet or funny about what a child said or did, and she would say, “I hope you write it down!”  Half the time I would, and half the time I’d think I’d do it later, but didn’t.  No, I’m not going to dwell on the plethora of missed memories, but instead decide I’m going to do better, starting today, and preserve what I can.

Recently, I was looking through old posts of my personal blog with the kids and sweetly rediscovering funny and special things that my kids did or said.  I want to be able to have more of these for future me and my future children to ponder on, so I will have to get busy today.

This makes me think of a quote from President Eyring.  He was talking about feeling grateful for something his father-in-law had done for him and his family and he heard a voice say, “I’m not giving you these experiences for yourself. Write them down.”  He goes on to recount that the journal he kept allowed him to see more clearly the hand of God in his life, but also for his children to see and remember what God had done for them.

Life can be so fleeting and short.  One of the ways we slow things down is by stopping and writing about it.  We pause the moment to record it and savor it a little bit more.
