We’re on a family vacation this week and next. We headed off to California (from Wisconsin) and are now on the return. My husband’s normal idea of a road trip would be to drive straight there, alternating drivers. This time I convinced him to break it up into fun little bites, stopping to see Mt Rushmore, different family members, etc. He has since commented, several times, that he has really enjoyed this trip and that he’s glad I planned it out the way I did. This way, the journey becomes the vacation, instead of the day and a half that we spent in California with 11 days traveling.
Parallel that with life. What is the destination? Is it finally arriving at the pinnacle of a career with a long climb before and decline after? Is it getting all those kids raised? Is it sludging through until the end of life until we die? Can the whole journey of life be our “trip?” The ups and downs, the little moments and the big moments, the successes and the failures… these are all part of the journey and the mortal experience we are having. Can we love the JOURNEY? ALL of it?
Pause. Right now. Ponder and wonder about the amazing moment you are in.
I love my journey and I hope you do too.
Quote for the week:
“The happiest people I know are not those who find their golden ticket; they are those who, while in pursuit of worthy goals, discover and treasure the beauty and sweetness of the everyday moments. They are the ones who, thread by daily thread, weave a tapestry of gratitude and wonder throughout their lives. These are they who are truly happy.”
