“Tongues of Angels”

In 3 Nephi 12, Christ is teaching people about their oaths and swearing not “by heaven” or “the earth.”  I couldn’t help but wonder then, if that includes some of my phrases like, “Oh my goodness,” or “Oh my lands,” or “Oh my heavens” that I use when I am frustrated.  Really, these are just filler words, which isn’t that the definition of expletives?

The last few years I’ve thought a lot about being intentional and deliberate.  This should probably include my speech.  Do I use filler words or phrases?  Yes.  Do I speak without thinking?  Probably a lot.

When praying, we are not supposed to use vain repetitions; we should put thought into what we say as we speak with our Father.  Our conversations with others should also be more deliberate.  What is our purpose?  Do we have one?  Are we trying to uplift?  Maybe correct or teach?  Or… is our speech digressing/ are we thoughtlessly trailing off on a tangent?  Are we complaining, or worse yet, gossiping?

For quite a few years I have wanted to be more gentle like our Savior; I feel strongly that this is the next step on my path.

“But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever cometh of more than these is evil.” (3 Nephi 12:37).
